Submitting Claims for Damages Against the County of Los Angeles

Important Information on Claims for Damages to Person or Property

When filing a claim for damages to person or property, you need to follow these essential guidelines:

  1. Presentation of Claim: A signed, written claim must be presented to the County of Los Angeles either by mailing or delivering it to the Executive Officer-Clerk of the Board of Supervisors, done either by the claimant or an authorized agent.
  2. Time Limits: Claims for death, injury to a person, or damage to personal property must be filed no later than 6 months after the occurrence, as per Government Code Section 911.2. For all other claims for damages, they must be filed no later than one year after the occurrence, also in accordance with Government Code Section 911.2. It’s essential to adhere to these timelines.
  3. Beware of False Claims: Be aware that the presentation of a false claim is a felony, as specified in Penal Code Section 72. Ensure that your claim is accurate and truthful.
